December 22, 2014

I got my skype info. Ya, 10 should work out great. I will see if we
can do a test run but it isn't to probable. The password is sunshine88
right.
Well, not a ton to report this week and writing each of the sobrinos
took a lot of time, so I will mainly talk to you about it during
skype!

Big news: I got five stitches in my leg this week but it's
alright because there is a reason for all things. I can preach for 3
days but they were some of the most uplifting days of my life. I will
explain more later. Also got your package with the church movies and
I am super excited!! Love you!!!! Talk to you on Thursday!!!!

Mckenzie, Always remember that you are a daughter of God and that _He
loves you. Through your obedience, you will be able to feel His love,
help and guidance. I love you! You are like my half sister. You are so
beautiful and fun. Always keep yourself in high esteems.

Braelyn, God loves you!! At times life has been really hard for you,
but always remember that you can look to God for love. If you desire
it and put your trust in Him, He will give you peace. Search for it
and relax enough to feel it. You are so smart and beautiful! I love
you!

Mercedes, I loved all of your letters and am sending one for you this
week. You are so adorable! Stay beautiful and confident.

Austin, You were the first to write me and are therefore my favorite.
;) I’m so excited that you were baptized and hope it was a great
experience. You might be a little young to understand this, but I hope
you make your baptismal covenants a huge part of your life and always
remember Jesus Christ and His sacrifice for you.

Isaac, You are so cute and adorable. I can’t wait to see how big you
are and all the trouble you cause when I get Back. You are so smart!
Love you!

Kenya, You are so strong and confident. I know you will always stay
firm in your testimony and obedience. These Junior high years can be
hard but I want you to always remember that you how amazing, smart and
beautiful you are.  You have a Heavenly Father that’s always looking
to help you and an uncle that loves you! From the Book of Mormon,
“only fools mock” don’t let them ever get you down.

Tahlia, You are so smart and beautiful! And you can sing and dance!
What more could you ask for? I enjoyed seeing you in Cinderella. I
think you were the cutest bird I had ever seen and my favorite too!
Victoria, You are so fun and always filled with so much energy and
attitude, I love it! Don’t tell the others, but you are one of my
favorite 22 nieces and nephews. SHHHH! I look forward to playing with
you when I get back! You are so beautiful and funny.

Collin, You are such a stud and so tough! I loved throwing you on the
bean bag and hope we can do more of that when I get back. Become
really good friends with your siblings and remember to be gentle with
the younger ones. I love you!

James, You are so kind and loving! I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a
more gentle, kind and considerate kid. Hopefully you still like to be
steam-rolled when I get back.

Joseph, You are so smiley and filled to the brim with the light and
love of Christ, I loved it when you would run to me, shouting my name
and would give me a big hug! It made me feel so good. Keep making
people happy. You are so friendly and handsome!

Charlie and Lydia, I know you can’t understand this, but you are both
so super, super, cute. I can’t wait to see how big you are after my
mission!

Afton, I remember giving you shoulder rides and always being super
excited when you would travel up from Moab. Hopefully I can still give
you shoulder rides when I get back. You are so beautiful, smart and
fun!

Grace, I can’t wait to hear your fluent Mandarin when I get back and
am so looking forward to playing with you! You are super smart,
beautiful and full of grace!
Jack, I enjoyed so much playing with you before my mission and I’m
sure I will continue to do so after. You are so friendly and I know
you will grow through the spirit and will help many to feel loved. I
don’t think I have ever enjoyed watching anyone eat a cake as much as
you at your first birthday party. Stay hungry and handsome!

Jordan, I’m pretty positive you will be ruling the world or have a
couple masters degrees by the time I get back! You are so smart! Be a
force for good. Keep getting smarter and more adorable!

Matthew, You are such a cool kid. I love playing with you. You are
always up to play a game or 2. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone that
loves Thomas the train as much as you did.  Maybe someday you will be
able to beat me at Mario Kart. I love you!

Molly, You are so adorable and so happy. Being able to laugh is a very
good attribute to have. Stay happy and super adorable!

Clara, I’m so excited to see you personality and how much you have
grown when I get back. You are so beautiful!

Henley, What a cutie! You have so much personality! I loved going on
the Disney cruise with you and your parents and can’t wait to see you
when I get Back. Remember that your parents love sassiness! ;)

Caleb, I know you won’t understood this, but I can’t wait to see how
big you are when i get back. If you are anything like your parents I’m
gonna love it!

To all:
You are so cute and adorable. I think I probably said so in all of
your letters. I miss you all so much and loved playing and laughing
with all of you. I’m looking forward to seeing how you have all grown
when i get back, spiritually and physically. Some of you will
understand this better than others, but take advantage of the time you
have with your families, especially during this Christmas season. Love
them! Serve them! Make each of them your friend. You don’t realize how
much you will miss them one day. Remember the traditions and
activities you have with them. In the future, they will probably
be some of your fondest memories. I love each you and want each of you
to know that God loves you and you can always look to Him for help.
Develop a personal relationship with Him while you are young. Read
Alma 37:35. Follow it! It’s the key to happiness, eternal happiness.
I’m so grateful to be family with each of one of you! I love you and
hope you are all just as cute, beautiful and smart when I get back,
Probably more!! Chau!

December 29, 2014

Mom, you basically repeated my thoughts exactly. Talking to you all
was super amazing! Afterwards I started crying. Partly because I
wouldn't get to see you all again until May, partly because of your
prayer and the song, but mostly because of the love I feel for
every one of you. I don't think I could be out here without knowing
that we are an eternal family and always will be. My companion and
his parents are the only strong members in his family or 12 and I
don't know how he does it. Most of his siblings have left the church
and want nothing to do with it. We talked about it a little bit and he
expressed to me how hard it really is but he is really super strong
and has a ton of faith for his family. And he loved the stocking and
cd by the way.
So I found out about the word Chinga. It actually is bad but not
really in Bolivia. It turns out that you actually add linga to the end
of the words not chinga. Luckily i only used it once or twice and
nobody really noticed. So it’s all good.
I also found out that _____, the man we were teaching that wanted to be
baptized,
stayed in Riberalta! He got sick, so he stayed in Riberalta while the
rest of his family moved to the rain forest. Sadly he lives with his
aunt in Tajibos, which is the zone of other missionaries.  So it turns
out that they’re going to finish the lessons with him and probably end
up baptizing him. I’m sad that I don’t get to finish the lessons with
him, but more than that, I’m super happy that he miraculously stayed
in Riberalta and will have a chance to be baptized.
Also if you could send me how the xc boys did at nationals, I have
been wondering about for a couple weeks.
This week was pretty hard. After talking with you all and seeing your
faces, I was super home-sick for a couple days. Luckily we worked
through it, but for a couple days, it really stunk. Seeing you guys
and talking with you was so much fun and I can’t believe that I have
to wait til May to do it again. Next time, I’m going to practice my
English before hand so that I can actually describe what I want to. It
was so weird not being able to speak English. I didn’t expect it at
all. Especially since I can write just fine, I just can’t speak! It’ll
come back. All the missionaries right now are at least a little
home-sick, but especially the newbees. It’s kind of funny.
We taught two new investigators after Christmas and it was amazing.
Both are super humble and ready to accept the gospel. One lady named
_____ was a really strong Catholic but left her congregation because
some of the things they said felt weird and she didn’t feel like the
Catholic church was united.  We taught her from the Bible about the
church and the Plan of Salvation and basically instantaneously
accepted that the church is true.  The spirit was super strong and
testified to her nephew that the church is true as well. He had a lot
of doubts and is in religious evangelist training basically but also
wants to learn more about the church and the gospel. We also taught a
man named _____, he was just prepared! He is super smart but also super
humble. He reads the bible a lot and loves our visits. He said that he
wants his whole family to take the lessons from here on. I am really
excited.
We also had a funny experience this week. We knocked at the door and
from the other said we heard someone singing.  It sounded human! We
yelled buenos tarde and the voice responded, “hola, buenos tarde.” We
waited for a couple minutes for the door to open but nothing happened.
We then asked, “hola, somos misioneros y tenemos una mensaje sobre
Jesucristo, podemos pasar?” It responded, “Si, Buenos tarde.” But once
again, nothing happened. We looked through a hole in the wall just to
see that it was another stupid, super smart parrot. I hate those
birds! I don’t understand how they can talk so well!
Well that was pretty much our after Christmas experience. Home-sick
but super excited to teach our new investigators. I love you!!!!!
Seeing you all was amazing!!!
Elder Bell
p.s. you say it, "te amo mas que la lengua puede decir!" theres
probably a better translation. you should ask dad. Honestly, I think
you'll pick up spanish really fast! I love you mom! Mas que mi lengua
puede describir en ingles o español!

From Elder Tyler Bell,
The beginning of this week was super good. We had a lot of really
spiritual lessons. We taught one family that was really strong in the
church but now are less active. Every time we teach them the spirit
is super strong! They know exactly what they need to do to receive the
blessings of the gospel and progress but they never complete their
compromismos. I don’t understand how they can feel the spirit so
strong every lesson but still not attend church or read in the Book of
Mormon. This is the biggest problem here! Everybody’s too lazy or busy
or worried to change their lives or fulfill their commitments. We had
a bunch of families that are menos activo a la iglesia esta semana
pero fueron diferente familias de la seman anterior. Es muy dificil
por que none of the investigators of menos activos attend church
unless we teach them at least twice that week or wake them up Sunday
morning. They don’t attend for themselves.  They need their own
testimonies but we are having a really hard time helping them find
them.
I got 9 letters and your package with garments and the SD card
adapter. I’m going to try to send photos today but the internet is
really really slow. About 20 minutes just to load my email!  I also
got letters 3 and 5 of Summer’s and am really hoping that the others
come.
I had a really cool experience with an investigator yesterday. He
wanted to see the baptismal font really bad. I took him in to see it
and as soon as we opened it up it was like the spirit poured out of
it. It was amazing! After that he attended the Christmas devotional
yesterday and wants us to teach him every day of the week. It’s really
cool. The problem is that he leaves December 20th to live with his
people in the rain forest and won’t be able to attend church for a
very long time. I don’t know If we should baptize him or not. Here
we’re advised to be somewhat hesitant to baptize people because of how
many menos actives there are. The mission had a really big problem
with missionaries baptizing people without really teaching them
anything. We’re not really sure what we should do.
We also had a really cool experience during a noche de hogar. Al
principio yo fui preocupado por que the DVD we brought to show the
family wasn’t working and there were about 30 people there. But then
the spirit calmed me down and said that everybody would learn what
they needed to. That lesson was probably one of our most spiritual so
far. We taught about charity and the love of God and I’m absolutely
positive everybody felt the spirit.
We also bought a little Christmas tree this week! I still can’t
believe it’s Christmas. Seeing temple square during the Christmas
Devotional yesterday was really weird. The devotional was good but we
kind of forgot about daylight savings time. We told everybody that it
started at 8 but it didn’t really start until 9. But besides that it
was pretty good.
Love you!!!!!!!

It's so true there is a very strong difference between the suffering
and repentance here in Bolivia. One package. 9 letters. 4 from
Mercedes.
From MOM:  “I love it!  So glad packages actually get to you.  Is it the one with the adapter for your camera?  I love that four letters were from Mercedes!!  What a sweet heart.  Who were all the other letters from?
Love you!
1 from Grandma. One from you and dad. Letters 3 and 5 from Summer. Yep
I have the adapter for my camera but I don't know if I can use it
today. The internet is really slow!!! :(

Dear Tyler,
This is McKenzie. Grandma is giving me a ride to school this morning. She says, "tag, you're it!" I've been thinking about you a lot lately. How you would always give me rides everywhere. You are and always will be my best friend. I miss going to dances or high school events with you. It just doesn't feel the same. I am so grateful to be able to have an uncle one year older than me that I spent most of my life with. I am so grateful for your strong example as a follower of Christ and your willingness to serve. You have helped me to become better just by your example.
I love you
(Ps. Grandma says you always get the last tag!) (;
McKenzie

From Tyler,

Thanks Mckenzie! I love your letter!  I miss many of these memories
that I had with you as well. I hope that we can have more similar
memories after my mission. Don't forget the times that we went to
carnivals together or played tag in the blue house or simply played in
the park. So many great memories. The family truly is one of the
greatest blessings we have in the Earth. Sometimes I think we forgot
about our families or their feelings a little too often!
It's only because I'm at a time disadvantage! That little stinker!
Love you!!!
Uncle TJ

No I can't believe it's already December. The new Elder’s that are new transfers are
awesome. Sadly I don't get to spend a ton of time with them only
Mondays and Thursdays in the mornings. Also the other missionaries are
moving out of our apartment today which is kind of sad. But I will be able to focus
more on my journal which is good! I have a couple questions for you.

This week has been amazing!!!  Probably the best week of my mission. My
companion and I had so many little miracles. We taught about 5 fathers
this week who are menos activos but are never home. We didn't follow
practically any of our plans this week but we were definitely guided
by the spirit. In each lesson with the fathers and less active
families, the father's expressed that the passed missionaries had
never been able to teach them because they are never home and that we
caught them for about the only hour they're home all week. It was
amazing.

We also taught a man named ……. He had a really hard heart
and basically disliked the church. His family was catholic but he
attended church because his wife was a strong member. When his wife
died, he and his family stopped attending. In the lesson, the spirit
was super strong. We could see his countenance change and his heart
being softened. Yesterday, he and all of his family attended church.

We also taught a man named O…..   O……sells soup but only Sunday
morning because it's the only morning that the men aren't at work.
His total income comes from it. We taught him about church attendance
and why we need to make sacrifices for the Lord. The spirit was once
again super strong. At first I was tempted to just wait til Enero
because we have church in the tarde but then the spirit told us that
he needs to make this sacrifice if he's going to gain a testimony and
stay active. He committed to attending church and has a really good
friend who is a member named R….. I am really excited to teach
him. I realized that everybody needs the oppurtunity to sacrifice
something for the Lord so that they can see the blessings it brings
and have a stronger testimony. This inspiration has helped my
companion a lot this week with our teaching. At first we kind of
avoided asking people to make sacrifices but now we look at them as
oppurtunities for greater blessings.

The only problem is that with all these miracles and spiritual
promptings have come new people for us to teach. This isn't bad but my
companion and I are struggling to find time to teach them all. Also
this week, we have a worldwide Christmas initiative to find new
investigators every day using the story of Christ. We then have to
report how many new investigators we have daily. I don't know how
we're going to do it. I'm honestly a little worried that we won't be
able to find time to teach some of our investigators this week but I
know all things are possible through faith!

We also visited 5 super active families this week. I think it was
something that we definitely needed to do. They had never been visited
by the missionaries and each family had super good ideas about how to
help certain families and about upcoming church activities. It was
really cool to get to know them and become their friends. Once again
each of them had more referencias and investigators! Pucha!

There was one active family that I think we visited just in time. They are
having marriage problems and their family is really close to falling
apart. We had a really spiritual lesson about eternal families and how
we can have more love in the home. They are doing better now but we
definitely have to continue to visit them.

I completely forgot it was Thanksgiving Thursday. I didn't remember
until 9 at night. It's amazing how time flies! One of the members gave
us tuna the other day and it tasted super good! Anything but chicken
and rice! Actually I'm starting to become accustomed to the food and
like it more and more so who knows, maybe chicken and rice will become
my favorite.

As far as my mission scripture, if you need to take parts out, only
use the begging of 8 until seen and the end 8, wherefore, go to,...
For 9 only use the end of the verse- wherefore, i did pour out... but
use all of 12. Thanks!!

Love you!!! My companion and I had a really spiritual talk this week
about the main reason we're out here and all I could think about is
how I want to help families accept the gospel and be as happy and
close as our family is!
Love you MTTCT!!!

Elder Tyler Bell at a park in Riberalta.

November 24, 2014

Santa Cruz, Bolivia

I haven't received any letters yet but
it takes about 6 to 8 weeks to get here.
I will be able to send pictures next week because there are a
bunch of new missionaries in Riberalta and a few of them have adapters
that I can borrow. Transfers were Thursday and Elder >>>>> moved to
Santa Cruz. My new companion is Elder >>>>. He is from Santa Cruz, has
9 siblings, and literally only studied and worked antes de su mision.
I asked him like 10 times about fun stuff in Santa Cruz or what he
liked to do and each time he said that he didn't know because he never
did anything for fun. That's pretty typical here. Life is usually just
work and collegio.
The other thing that I'm super grateful for is that
our family does fun things together. I now understand why families are
so different here. It seems they're only together to eat and sleep and never
have recreational activities or play games. It sounds horrible!
With my new companion we work super hard every day and I love it!!!
We
teach all day and after every day I feel super good. I'm learning a
lot from my companion, especially about the Bible. We are really good
friends. Everything is a lot more enjoyable when you're serving with
someone that you're really close to. The only bad part is that he
really loves to talk. I don't get very many chances to say things and
our lessons are an hour and half usually. Which is a problem. We need
our lessons to be around 40 minutes on average. We're going to work on
it.
None of our investigators attended church again yesterday. At first I
was kind of discouraged because all of our hard work didn't show any
results, but then I realized that I was working as hard as I could and
they have the agency to accept the gospel or not.
All of the new missionaries are greengos. I went from being the only
white guy to a common aspect of our zone. We are now the only zone to
be half greengos. Three of them are fresh out of the CCM. I'm really
excited to meet them today!
I also felt a huge difference when I focus on just loving the
investigator. During one of our lessons the spirit of love was super
strong. We just talked with him about his life for about 40 minutes
before the lesson and he really opened up. He went from being really
quiet and didn't enjoy the lessons to talking most of the time and
always asking us when we can return. It was amazing! Also I realized
that nobody here does family history work. I asked the president of
the Rama (Branch) about it and we are now setting up a family history
system for the ward and calling 3 people to help people with the work.
I'm really excited to get this started!
For servicio esta semana we did carpeting. I was kind of confused
because every one has dirt floors and nobody has carpet. Then we started
and I realized what it really is. It's basically whacking the ground
with machetes to destroy the grass and level the ground.
There was also this really annoying parrot in one of our lessons. I
just thought it was annoying because it spoke better Spanish than I
did and kept laughing like it was mocking me!
Love you MTTCT!!!

One more thing. We have 2 other missionaries living with us right now
because there house is getting painted and every night from 9:30 to 10
is a party. It's super fun getting to know the other missionaries and
hearing about there native countries! Last night we also bowled with
coconuts and 2 liter bottles that we slightly filled with water. Love
you!!!

Thanks mom!!!! Also, if you want to send in your next package, LDS
movies specifically made by the church like the movie about Joseph
Smith, The Testaments, On the Lords Errand, and the Restauracion that
would be great. For carnival in March we sit inside for three days
straight and I think I will need those to make it through! Also some
more pictures of the Fam. My relationship with my companion is better
than ever. It took some work but we made it through. He didn't really
want to talk to me at first but after about 20 questions about his
home he finally opened up and we've been good friends since.
Even more discouraging than problems with my companion however are
problems with the investigators. None of them attended church
yesterday and all of them promised too. We can't get any of them to
follow up on their commitments and they can't recognize the blessings
until they do. I guess all we can do is keeping loving them and having
faith that they will have a change of heart!
I was made into an English tutor for the natives in our zone that
don't know English and they have all been picking it up really fast. I'm
afraid some of them might start to know English more than I know
Spanish. I am also second counselor to the President de Rama and the
new gospel doctrine teacher for the branch. The hardest part is just
the Spanish. I also think that our Rama is starting to respect me
more. Before this week, they always just treated me as the white
missionary that didn't know Spanish. I talked a lot in one of our
meetings yesterday and now I think they're starting to realize that I
have good ideas that can help the Rama. So that's exciting.
Last Monday we went to a park named Esmeralda. It was super fun. They
had tennis, soccer, ping pong and a zip line into a lake. Sadly we
couldn't go on the zip line or in the lake but playing games with the
other missionaries is always a blast. I think the best part was just
being able to relax for a couple hours. We stayed for 4 hours but it’s
amazing how your desires change on your mission. After 3 hours, 2
missionaries were reading their Book of Mormons and the rest of us
wanted to go back and prepare to teach. Honestly the best part of
every day is sitting with an investigator and helping them learn and
progress with the spirit. I just wish we had more of it!! It also
rained for 2 days straight this week. I didn't think it was possible
to get more humid than it already was but I was wrong. With the rain,
pretty much everything is a little bit damp and nothing dries because
of how humid it was. Also there was actually cloud cover, apparently
that never happens in Riberalta. It almost always rains while it’s
still sunny. It dropped to about 60 degrees one night and everybody
besides me and my companion were wearing giant winter coats and were
freezing. I thought that was pretty funny!
One of our investigators made us hamburgers Saturday night. I've been
craving one really bad and I don't think I've ever tasted anything so
amazing. The hamburgers are different here, if you can ever find one.
The bread is covered with melted cheese and there's egg, beef, ham,
tomatoes and corn on the inside. It was super good.
We also had kind of a scary experience yesterday. A drunken guy
confronted us and told us to enter his house. I was ready to speedily
walk away but for some reason, my companion complied and entered the
house. He stood in the door way and talk about his life problems over
and over again. We tried to teach him at first, but he wouldn't listen
and it only made him mad so we ended up just sitting there. We were
stuck there for two hours until he kind of passed out on the ground.
After that we left pretty hastily.
Well that's pretty much everything for this week. Love you super super
super much!!! Can't wait to get your packages! Love you MTTCT!

Thanks mom!!! The blog is great! For my scripture,
I think I'll stick with the one I originally chose, Enos 1: 8, 9, and 12.
Everything is going great here, well almost everything. We lost an
investigator this week because his pastor basically attacked the
church and told him that none of it was true and was an abomination.
He also said that the Book of Mormon was an invention made to deceive
by a really really intelligent educated man. We tried to tell him that
Joseph Smith didn't have an education and the only way he could know
if the church was true for himself is if he read and prayed but he
didn't really want to listen to us. This was kind of rough.
Honestly, the biggest troubles we are having here are that the people
don't really know what they believe or what their church believes.
We tell them things such as the celestial kingdom or that
families can be together forever and they respond by saying, "oh ya,
of course. That’s what we believe in.

Also we didn't have any investigators assistir a la
Iglesias esta semana. It was kind of rough. But we did have the most
menos activo miembros tenemos todavia. I don't think that it helps
that church is at 8 in the morning. Nobody wants to wake up!
We also had a cool experience with one of our investigators.
He loves to read but has never owned a book and doesn't
remember or understand anything he reads which can be really difficult
at times. We gave him a book of Mormon this week and he was super
excited. It made me super happy. It's amazing all the things we have
in the U.S. and here most people have never even owned anything that
wasn't primarily for survival.
I changed companions for a day this week and Elder ___ came to work
with me in my area. We taught more lessons than I have in the past and
contacted more people. It was great because I was directing everything
we did.
We also found a huge list of Menos activos and old
investigators that we can contact and so far it's been really helpful.
There is definitely a smart way to do missionary work!
We also had to stay in our casa for an hour extra one day this week
because there was a big fight right outside our window.
It was only high school kids that wanted to prove themselves but it was
still a pretty finasco with the police and all. Another big problem is
that almost none of the men here hold the priesthood because they
don't attend church enough. So almost none of them have
callings but we're working on it and things are progressing bit by bit.
That was pretty much my week. It's amazing how fast time flies by. I
didn't really believe it would go this fast before my mission but it
is definitely zooming by faster than ever before. I love you!!!!!
