Elder Tyler Bell arrives in Bolivia, Santa Cruz North Mission October 8, 2014

 October 13, 2014
These first couple days have been really difficult but everything is going pretty well. My companion doesn`t speak any english which makes it really hard to communicate about everything. Most of the time, I have no clue what’s going on. There is only one person in my entire zone that speaks english and he only wants me to speak spanish, plus I only see him once a week. It is super hot here. None of the houses have air conditioning and most dont have windows, just holes in the walls. I feel like I am in a constant state of sweat, but I’ve gotten used to it. The key is drinking a gallon a day and always having a fan and a little towel. It works pretty well. Our shower only has one temperature, but luckily its super cold. I never thought i would appreciate a cold shower so much. My mission president is awesome! He is one of the kindest guys I have ever met. My companions name is Elder Aramayo, he is from Bolivia and really likes telling jokes that I pretend to understand. Last night, we had a five minute english session. By the end, we were both laughing cause we had no clue what the other person was saying. Bolivian Spanish is really hard to understand. They mumble a lot and drop all of their s’s. When I talk to a peruvian elder in my zone, I understand almost everything. But whenever I try to talk to a Boliviano or my companion its really hard to understand what they’re saying. My companion and I are the only people living at our apartment. It’s really nice and big. It has two bathrooms which is practically unheard of here in Bolivia.
My first area is in Riboralta. Its a small city, or large village depending on how you look at it, in the very north of Beni. It's in the jungle and is the only city to have red dust and dirt everywhere.
Nobody here can afford to drive cars, but everybody drives motorcycles. Everybody drives a motorcycle, whether you’re 8 or 98. There are literally about 10 cars and 500 motorcycles. Its crazy! We ride on these things called moto-taxis. Its super fun! Its usually pretty safe too, unless the light turns green without the other one turning red which has happened a few times. It usually just ends up in a lot of honking and yelling though. We flew in on a small plane on Saturday. It was basically a really hot roller coaster without any air conditioning. I was dying by the end. The airport was just a runway with a control hut. It was an interesting experience. For the first couple days in Bolivia, we just kind of sat around, studied and filled out paperwork and medical forms for immagracions. It was kind of boring. But now we’re in the work and it’s going by super fast. Unfortunately, we couldn’t leave our casas yesterday cause it was the day that every bolivian voted for a new president. At night
there were a ton of celebrations. We’ve only been able to teach one lesson so far. They asked me a ton of questions about Utah but I didn’t understand hardly any of them. But luckily we get to teach two
more lessons tonight and I feel like these ones will go better. That picture of Lumber was super cute by the way. Every dog down here reminds me Lumber and I feel super bad for them. But there’s still no way I would ever touch one.  They are pretty mean and gross. I don’t need any stain remover by the way, but the tide pen would still be nice. Also I need a little package of blue tac and little mirror. Apparently they don’t believe in mirrors down here in Bolivial.
I love you and think of you hourly!!!!
Love, Elder Bell

I can't print emails right now but I may be able to find a way in the future. It sounds like everything is going great at home which makes me super super happy. I can't even explain to you how much I have misssed you and the rest of the family during this first week. All of our work this week has been with less active families. We've only been able to teach one investigator. There are 300 members in Riberalta but only 60 of them are active. I am so grateful I have such an amazing, strong in the gospel family.
I taught a lesson this week to a family that's really struggling. They are really poor and their kids are super overwhelming. I was able to testify with power about how the gospel blesses families. The children stopped crying and the spirit was so strong. I know I wouldn't have been able to do it without your love and amazing example.
I fasted yesterday and it was the first time that fasting was really hard for me. I was so dehydrated that I even stopped sweating for the first time. By the end of the 24 hours I literally had no power left, I could barely walk. But the spirit ever since has been so strong. Every lesson has had the spirit and I'm learning Spanish faster than ever. If you could also ask dad how he learned Spanish Vocabulary and remembered all of it that would be great. I feel like a lot of times I memorize something and then forget it.
I gave a talk in church yesterday. It was only a little 10 minute one. It went super well. I wasn't nervous at all because there were only about 35 people in the congregation. I'm hoping that I can change that. It reminded me of one of those wards we visited on our trips to mexico. Once again thinking of you.
The people here love to talk. Each lesson or visit takes at least 50 minutes and we do only about 30% of the talking. I'm really hoping that I can learn how to control the lessons a little better. Overall the experiences and love for the people I have gained so far have been incredible. At the begginning of my mission I didn't know how I was gonna have fun for two years working every day, but I now I understand that it's through the work, love, service and spirit that you get all your joy.
I no longer need a mirror but I do need 2 mesh medium crew neck garment tops and 2 mesh garment shorts medium short. The only place you can get garments in Bolivia is at the Cochabamba temple which sadly I won't be going to.
I love and miss you guys so so much and more and more every week.

It would be better if they were all in one message but this is alright too. Summerisa's package never got there but you gave me the letters and that was the important thing. Sadly I can't find a chord to connect my pictures to the computer with. Maybe you could try sending one. It just needs to be able to connect an sd card to the computer. I don't think they put pictures on the blog of missionaries that aren't in Santa Cruz cause there's no way to get them.
We played soccer this week and it was super fun! Elder Escobar picked me first because he saw me play at the CCM. All the Latinos thought that he was crazy and definitely underestimated me. After I scored the first three goals they said that I tricked them. "You're not a white north American, You're Latino!" It was pretty funny! The beginning of this week was really hard. We had a day that we didn't teach anybody. All of our appointments fell through and nobody would listen to us when we contacted. It was the first time a door had been slammed in my face. The week before everybody let us in. Now I see what contacting is usually like. Right after that, My companion got super sick and had to go to the hospital. He sat in the casa for 2 days. Luckily one of those days was my day to go on splits with the zone leaders. Luckily it was the other guy in our zone that speaks English. It was super nice to finally get all my questions about the mission answered in a way that I completely understood! I got food poisoning one day but was able to work through. Luckily it wasn't to bad.
The food here was really good at first. But now it's chicken, rice and coca cola every single meal. We eat lunch and dinner with the members. I swear eating this much of the same thing has got to be bad for you especially with how much coke goes with it.
We're starting to teach a guy that I'm really excited about. The first things he said to us were about how he really wanted to change and come unto Christ. I'm really excited to work with him! So far we've had two lessons with him that have both been really spiritual. When I get down, teaching him always makes me feel better. The only problem is that he can't read which makes working with the scriptures hard because he can't read them by himself. One of our progressing investigators moved away this week which was hard because he was really close to baptism but luckily he's moving into a great zone of missionaries. There are so many families here. Every single one of our lessons besides one or two has been to and about families. I know that I was sent here to testify about how the gospel blesses families. Every time I do, I can't help but think about our family. I couldn't have gotten a better family!!
We had 72 people at sacrament meeting yesterday which was super good to see. One less active father agreed to go teaching with us and you could tell he felt the spirit. He bore his testimony twice in everyone of our lessons without even being asked. I don't think his family will be inactive every again!
My computer just turned off twice and now I'm almost out of time. Love you!!!!!

Yes, I take my vitamins every day. I leave Monday morning. My flight leaves at 10 a.m. for Panama and then we connect to a flight to Bolivia. We'll get to Bolivia about at about 10 P.M. It's crazy to think that I'm almost out of the MTC already! It's been going by so fast! That's awesome that you've been able to visit Ally and will see Mark and Tana in two months. I probably won't write you too much this week. Usually I just take the highlights out of my journal to share them with you, but my bag, with my journal in it, was stolen last week.  I accidentally left it in the computer lab after I emailed you last week. I went back to look  for it 2 hours later and it was already gone. I've checked the lost and found and reception every day but nobodies turned it in yet. It had my Jesus the Christ book, journal, Spanish hymn book, spanish dictionary and 10 pens in it. i know it's kind of a long shot but if you could pray for me to find it that would be great. It was my blue fanny pack bag. Luckily you sent me an extra Spanish himnos, but if you could send me Jesus the Christ and my farewell talk in your package to Bolivia that would be amazing.

We watched a movie about Joseph Smith on Sunday. It was amazing! I think it might have been my favorite movie of all time. I realized that I didn't really have a huge testimony in Joseph Smith. I've always known he was a true prophet and that everything about him was true. But I don't think I fully respected him or understood everything that he went through until I watched that movie. My testimony about him is so much stronger and emotional now! We also watched to past devotionals that were given by Elder Bednar. Our mission president  loves him! We watch at least one or two talks by him every week. One was about the natural man, Christmas and the cookie monster, the other was about taking notes for conference. They were both pretty good.

Our night teacher left this week for BYU. It was kind of sad cause he was a really good teacher.  I'm so ready to leave and start teaching. Yo estoy muy animado a llevar en el campo. I can't wait to see what Bolivia's like! It's gonna be awesome!! I'm also really excited to talk to natives on the plane. My conversational Spanish isn't the greatest but it's definitely good enough to have a conversation. I know all the grammar and tenses but I have a hard time remembering them and using them split second. Especially the subjunctive tenses! They're killer. Either way though, it's gonna be super fun.
Love you both mas que mi lengua puede hablar.

Hi, mom. I was just given a quick email session to email you my travel info. I leave tomorrow at 10 to Panama and then Bolivia. I think I already told you.
This week has been so amazing. The day I emailed you, My district played soccer and its a rule you that you cant play contact sports with watches on. I left mine with some other peoples next to the court and when we were done, mine was gone. Just mine. I was really mad and I didnt know why I was losing so much stuff. I bought a new watch for 200 pesos, that night. According to my luck, that watch stopped working two hours later and the tienda has a no return policy. At this point, I just didnt know what to think. Maybe I was doomed to never had a watch. Maybe they dont actually follow time in Bolivia. I didnt know, why this was happening. The next morning as I was reading my scriptures, I found what I needed to change in my life and that my lost possessions had been to humble me. Last night my watch magically appeared in the reception. There was no account of it ever getting turned in, but yet it was there. What a miracle.
This morning we had a class about asking God for specific things through very specific ways. There was a story just like mine about a missionary that lost his bag and asked God if he would return it at a specific time, date, and place. It happened. Likewise, I made my prayer to find my bag this afternoon as specific as possible. I gave it a 15 minute window where I would wait at reception for my bag to be turned. At the end of the 15 minutes, no one had come. I waited an extra 5 minutes when I decided to ask reception about my bag again. The lady said she didn-t have my bag. Right as I was about to leave, She stopped me and said that she felt like she needed to give me some things. She gave me a Jesus the Christ book, himnos, dictionary and some pens. I knew it was an answer to my prayer although it wasnt exactly what I was looking for. The only thing Im really missing now is my journal.
I was also able to buy a bag from the tienda that should work great. It was amazing because it was the first time theyve had them in months. Miracle.
As Ive been watching conference, It has filled me with love and home sickness. I love and hate the pictures of Salt Lake and I cant help but think of you. I remembered times we went to the conference center or temple square, things we did as a family, or priesthood sessions I attended with Dad o mis hermanos. Secretly in my heart, I longed to be watching it with you guys, yet it was definitely the most productive conference Ive had. I took 15 pages of notes. I wish I could send them to you, but Im out of time. Love you all!!!!!

Week 3 & 4 September 17 - 24, 2014

September 17, 2014

Hi mom! My companions and I are currently laughing about the mayhem at our house. Everybody is getting hurt! I guess missions really do bless families! My companion is from Provo. We talk about our different needs and problems as missionaries and now everything is going much better. We've been talking solemeinte in Espanol for the past two days so sorry if my English is weird. My English is getting worse as my Spanish is getting bettter! My bag is great.  I have flossed, brushed and used mouth washed 2 to 3 times every day. Also if you could send a copy of Yours and dads patriarchal blessings and some stories about both of your parents by mail and email that would great. Ive had iompressions that I need to read them and sadly theres not a printer I can use. Sorry that Im not putting apostrophes, theyre really hard on this spanish keyboard!

This week has been going great. We started a new game called find Elder ......... girlfriend. We take a little picture that ........ had of his gfriend and hide it around the casa. Whoever finds it gets to rehide it. So far everybodys found it at least once besides him. Yesterday and Monday were Mexican Independence days. It was super crazy! There were fireworks and music all night. We also watched Mexican traditional dancing for our celebration. It was the most boring thing ever. They basically just walked around the stage in big dresses for 2 hours. I decided to study for about the last hour. It was pretty productive!

We got to watch a live devotional from Provo MTC yesterday with Richard G. Scott as the speaker. We were all really excited. Unfortunately, he gave the same talk that we watched for our first Sunday devotional. Apparently he gives that specific talk a lot. It was kind of a bummer but I still got some pretty good notes. Its amazing what I am excited about now. We watched the restoration on Sunday and I dont know if I have ever been more excited to watch a movie in my entire life. Devotionals and church movies are more exciting for me now than I ever thought possible. They went from being a chore to being a fiesta.

I saw one of the most inspiring talks Ive ever seen on Sunday. It was by a 30 year old bishop named Bishop Cates. He talked about his missionary experiences and how much he struggled at first with the language. It made me feel a lot better about how my studying is going and at the same time inspired me to do more. It was awesome. Also, if you could pray for me to stay more focused during studying and have a greater desire to study that would be great. Its really hard to study right now because my class is really really loud and rowdy and I have to stay in that room to study.

I weight lifted with this other guy in my district last week and Im still sore. Apparently hes even stronger than I thought he was. But I did kill him when it came time to run around the track so thats good! The other companionship moved out of our room last week. It was kind of bitter sweet. They are super awesome, but now my companion and I have the whole room and a shower to ourselves. So far Im liking the change! Jason ....... left this week but not before he challenged me to a game of ping pong. I destroyed him three games in a row. He was pretty awestruck.

I love you MTTCT. Tell the fam I love them too.

September 24, 2014

I got your package! Sister ...... hand delivered it to me while I was in class and it was probably the most exciting thing that´s happened to me here so far! Not a ton happened this week. The letters from Valecia's family and Austin were super cute. I have the cutest nieces and nephews in the world!! Just a lot more studying and teaching. Sadly we didn´t make up any new games and my districts soccer career was really short lived! We played three games the day after we won a lot and got destroyed in all of them (I wasn´t goally). Since then my district hasn't wanted to play again. So it likes like that's the end of soccer in the CCM. But on the bright side, I am getting pretty good at volleyball.

I have been able to stay on task a lot, lot more easily now. The class is still super noisy but a lot of the time I don't even notice. Its amazing the blessings the Lord has provided for me here. In our lessons, my companion and I are now able to switch off practically perfectly in every single lesson. Even more cool is that we now have the ability not only to teach the lesson but explain everything we want to and bear our testimonies in the ways we want. It's great!!! My gospel language is good but when I try to talk to natives just about normal stuff, I'm super lost most of the time.

I started reading the Jesus the Christ books that Anji gave to me. At home, reading it seemed kind of boring but now its my favorite part of study time. Talmage goes in depth on so many cool things about Christ and backs everything he says with scriptures. It's been really cool. We also had 2 talks this week: one from Bednar and one from Ballard. A general authority is coming here tomorrow morning to speak live to us as well, but we don´t know who it is.

My companion and I had a really cool experience teaching a lady who was actually a less active member this week. The spirit was super strong! We were able to discuss all of her needs and committed her to going to church again on Sunday. We also taught a lesson in the church with a fake investigator. It's amazing the spirit that comes just from being in the house of the Lord.

I went on my first run yesterday. It was really slow and it was really part of service but it was still good. We drove around in a truck and delivered 6 gallon water jugs to the casas, Everyone else rode in the truck a lot of the time, but I thought it was a good opportunity to get a run in so I just ran behind it. It was surprisingly fun. The guy said it was also the fastest the water jugs had ever been delivered, so we got a thirty minute free time break as a reward!

P.S. If you send me another package, I would really like a tide pen and some stain remover. Also in the shoe polishing kit you gave me, there's only brown shoe polish. If you could send me some black shoe polish it would be great. Love you more and more each week!!

Week 2

September 10, 2014

Hi Mom. This week has been going great. It just flew by! I can't believe it's Wednesday already. Every day has been study, eat, play for an hour, study and repeat. I've been having a hard time studying the language because my district is so noisy and social. My companion is learning the language at an insane rate and its making me kind of jealous but I have nothing to complain about.  Our lessons are pretty rough, but yes we have taught all of them solemente en Español. We've had some good lessons and then some that were just horrible. The fake investigators are definitely starting to make it harder on us.

I played cage soccer for the first time this week and I got my whole district to play with me. It was Amazing! We were matching shirts and everybody was making fun of us at first. My district definitely doesn´t look athletic. We got out there and I was expecting to get destroyed. Then we won four games in a row and had three teams challenge us for a rematch today. I was super happy. I was goally and never got scored on. Plus I scored a fair share of goals as well. Not wanting to brag or anything! ;) My district is way into soccer now. Gym time is definitely looking up.

We have had three amazing devotionals that were re-runs of talks by Elder Holland, Scott and some area authorities. They have been so inspiring. I'm reading about the Sons of Mosiah in the Book of Mormon right now. Nothing could inspire me to work hard more than my reading combined with the devotionals. The spiritual high everyday is amazing.

Thank you so much for letters and support!
Love you all MTTCT!

First Letter Mexico City Mission Training Center

September 3, 2014

Hi mom! Usually my p-day emailing will be earlier than this, but today my district went to the Mexico City temple. Sadly the temple closed till May but the visitors center was still really cool.

So far everything's going great. The CCM (MTC) is huge! there are over 800 missionaries here and everything is pretty spread out. It doesn't look like the rest  of Mexico City at all. All the buildings in the City are really crammed, dirty and concrete. Here we have 2 soccer fields, 3 basketball courts, a tennis court, 2 gyms, and a football field. It's really nice!

My first two days were really really hard. I was really home sick and working on language and studying from 7 to 9 everyday was killing me. The first couple days were filled with orientations and we didn't get any gym time. They were really rough. But after that I adjusted really well and didn't feel nearly as lost. Working as much as we do is honestly kind of enjoyable now. My district is really funny but sometimes we definitely get way to distracted. My companion is pretty strict and focused so we usually go outside where it's quiet to study.

My companion is great. He's a really hard worker and he obeys the rules so exactly.  We're always the first ones in the classroom and last ones to leave. It shows in our lessons.

The Spanish is coming along really well. There's still a ton of stuff that I don't understand, but I can hold conversations and teach full lessons (not super well, but i can do it). Never mind, there's one more thing I wish was different. They don't have any Spanish grammar classes. whenever you want to study Spanish grammar and sentence structure, you have to do it independently. A lot of stuff I just don't get and I wish there was a class to help me.

We started teaching lessons in Spanish to a fake investigator on Saturday. So far my companion and I are basically killing it. He's getting baptized in a month and he said that he'll come to church but I don't know how excited he is. He doesn't seem like he really cares. It's kind of weird.

This morning at the temple, we watched this video about eternal families and it made me miss all of you so much. There's a lot of things I took for granted in the states that whole new meanings to me now that I'm away from you guys in a second world country. It's amazing what a week can do to you. It feels like a month since I've seen you all. Here the time just disappears or stops you like a wall depending on the day. You'd truly have to be a missionary to fully understand how it is.

(Tyler's response to Summerisa's broken clavicle.)
Oh NO!!!!! That's so sad! I bet Summer is really grieved. Tell her and Braelynn (broken ankle),that I'm sorry and that I love them. Tell the whole family that I miss and love them as well!! Those pictures made me feel really happy. Also tell Summer that I was wrong. Emails and letters do mean everything here.

Love you mttct!
